The Gallardo V10 engine

Lamborghini unveils details of the new Gallardo

For the first time in over a decade Lamborghini will offer a second model line as of 2003. The completely new Lamborghini model - designated project L140 - will be called the Gallardo (pron.: ga:yàrdo) and will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year.

The new Lamborghini takes its name from a famous fighting bull breed, selected since the 18th century by bull breeder Francisco Gallardo and then
incorporated by Don Antonio Miura. Fierce, robust - black or grey - the Gallardo bulls were renowned for their courage and also for their power and aggression until the so-called last "third" of the Corrida.

The new Lamborghini Gallardo will be a mid-engined four wheel drive sportscar in true Lamborghini tradition, powered by an all new V10 cylinder 5 litre Lamborghini engine producing an impressive 500 bhp. Power transmission will be through a 6 speed gearbox with a traditional gearshift lever or a new sequential gearshift with shift paddles at the steering wheel. To keep weight down both chassis and body will be aluminium.

Production of the all new Lamborghini V10 engine has already started on the newly built assembly line at Lamborghini's own engine facility at the Sant'Agata Bolognese plant. Lamborghini has ambitious growth plans now that it is part of the Audi empire, also in the pipeline - an open top version of the Murcielago and a successor to the off-road LM vehicle.
