Fiat
FIAT in Australia
Fiat were present in the Australian market until the late 1980s when the Australian vehicle import quota regime was changed. The Australian importer had been able to transfer its annual supply quota for Fiats to its more successful Japanese brands and so when this finished Fiat withdrew from the market.
The Fiat Regata was the last model sold in Australia when Fiat pulled out in 1989. With the renewed success of Fiat in Europe (a number of models have won European Car of the Year) and the successful return of Alfa Romeo (a Fiat company) to Australia in 1998, Fiat is once again contemplating a return to Australia with Ateco Automotive the Alfa importers. The Australian market has also changed in the interim, with several other European makes present. Fiat has already launched a commercial van - the Ducato - here and plans to bring the Punto and Stilo models to Australia at a later date - although this date seems to be pushed back every year.
